Georgia DOT warns of phony traffic fines scam artist

A warning from the Georgia Department of Transportation about a scam artist who appears to be trying to intimidate Metro area motorists into paying fraudulent traffic fines.

Georgia DOT received a citizen's complaint last week about an individual identifying himself as a "Lt. Derek White of the Georgia DOT" contacted her by telephone insisting that she pay by phone more than $300 in speeding fines or face imprisonment.

There is no individual named Derek White employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Further, the GDOT has no enforcement or collection authority regarding traffic tickets or fines. Appropriate law enforcement agencies have been notified.  

Anyone approached by this individual or having information regarding this matter is asked to please contact local law enforcement or the Department's Investigations Unit at (404) 347-0620.
