Cool, rainy weather has kept usual Atlanta smog at bay

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) -- Cool and rainy weather this summer has kept smog from forming in metro Atlanta as it typically does on hot summer days.

Atlanta's ground-level ozone exceeded federal standards Tuesday for the first time this summer - a record late date.

Mike Rieman, a spokesman for The Clean Air Campaign, says metro Atlanta had already exceeded the standard 14 times by this time last year.

Smog -- or ground-level ozone -- is formed when air pollutants from industry, vehicles and other sources react in sunlight.
