Deputies: man shot daughter's boyfriend

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors say the fighting started as soon as they moved in.

"The very first day the police showed up, probably three hours after they moved in. And then they've been here a month and a half, and the cops have been here at least two or three times that I know of," says neighbor Billy Strait.

Investigators say 44-year-old Jeff Davis lives here with his grown daughter and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Michael Davis. They say trouble has been brewing for weeks.

"We have had issues here before. Can't say that we've had a shooting here recently but this particular address we've responded to numerous times for domestic disputes," says Melanie Snow with Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

But today, the tensions between them boiled over. Deputies say Jeff Davis pulled out a gun and shot his daughter's boyfriend, Michael Davis just before noon.

The two are not related, despite having the same last name. They say his daughter found out what happened when she came home from work and called 911.

"There was a lot of yelling and screaming going on but I never saw anything because I didn't want to get involved," says one neighbor, who didn't want his face shown. He added that he heard the fighting almost daily, but he never thought anyone would get shot.

Others say they're not surprised.

"No. Not at all. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner," Strait said. Investigators aren't sure what prompted the shooting, or what they've described as an ongoing dispute. But Jeff Davis does have a record for charges that include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The boyfriend who was shot, Michael Davis, has been arrested before too, on felony drug charges. Neighbors say they are just glad that no one else was hurt.

"It's scary because, I have an 8-year-old inside and a stray bullet could've come across and hit him and then that would not have been a good situation," Strait said.

Michael Davis remains in the hospital in critical condition. Deputies say Jeff Davis is in custody, and charges are expected.
