FDA's warning about dietary supplement

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that some vitamin supplements on store shelves may be laced with potentially dangerous anabolic steroids.

The vitamin B dietary supplements are branded Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50, the FDA said.

"Products marketed as a vitamin but which contain undisclosed steroids pose a real danger to consumers and are illegal," said Howard Sklamberg, director of the FDA's Office of Compliance. "The FDA is committed to ensuring that products marketed as vitamins and dietary supplements do not pose harm to consumers."

The FDA said that the company that markets the supplements, Purity First Health Products of Farmingdale, N.Y., did not voluntarily recall the products.

But Candice Tripp, the owner of Purity First, blames the manufacturer of the supplements, which is also based in Farmingdale. She also disputes the FDA's claim that the company didn't voluntarily recall the vitamins. She told Fox 5's Dan Bowens that has ruined the business that she has run for two decades.

"That is not what I stand behind, that is not what my company is based on," Tripp said. "My business is just about done. After all these years I have to close my doors because I got a call today that there's a potential some more of my products are contaminated."
