Insurance company sues 1-800-ASK-GARY

Posted: Updated:

1-800-ASK-GARY is the focus of a federal lawsuit.

The legal referral hotline is being sued by insurance giant State Farm over what it calls a "massive fraud scheme."

In the lawsuit, State Farm accuses 1-800-ASK-GARY of tricking clients into thinking the hotline is an independent referral service, and then steering all callers to clinics with The Physicians Group, which in turn pays "GARY" a fee.

The complaint also says some callers are put in touch with lawyers who secretly agree to refer their clients to those same clinics.

An attorney for The Physicians Group calls the State Farm lawsuit "desperate" and "absurd."

He says many 1-800-ASK-GARY callers are not referred to clinics with The Physicians Group and he says lawyers are free to refer clients to any doctor they choose.
