A Valrico woman is in critical condition after she was involved in a vehicle crash that caught her car on fire, and according to deputies, the other driver involved fled the scene.
Thirty-eight year-old Donald Ward of Land O' Lakes is charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, 22-year-old Anne Fanning was driving on the Brandon Parkway Extension just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday night. Deputies said Ward failed to stop at a stop sign, crossed the westbound lanes of Providence Road, and struck Fanning's car on the driver's side.
Fanning's Mazda caught fire, and patrol deputies had to use 6 fire extinguishers to keep the fire from spreading to the cab. Fanning was transported to Tampa General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
Deputies said Ward fled the accident scene on foot and was later apprehended by K9 deputies as he tried to escape by jumping into a retention pond. Ward was treated for minor injuries before he was taken to jail.
The Sheriff's office says there could be additional charges pending toxicology results.
