Volunteer, 98, can't stop helping others

Posted: Updated:

Florence Katz is as bright as the outfits she wears. At age 98, she's still looks great, always dressed to the nine's with makeup and heels! For the last 19 years she's warmed the hearts of everyone she meets while volunteering at the Jewish Family Services Center of Manatee County in Sarasota.

Florence says her goal is to make everyone smile. And she does just that - greeting every person at the senior outreach center. Most of the people at JFSC are homebound and go to the center for counseling, lunch and entertainment. Some of the clients say it's the best meal they've had all week.

Florence says too many seniors are depressed and living in isolation and wants to keep them connected to the community. She believes the most important word in your vocabulary is perseverance.

"Sometimes you think maybe, maybe not, but you get up and you go and that's important. If you have perseverance you wont be in a walking chair" says Florence.

Two children, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren later, Florence has helped serve her entire life and plans to continue as long as she can. "I try to keep busy to keep my mind going. If I can do that I am happy."
