A Brooksville woman is facing serious fines, after deputies found her living outside her trailer with nearly 20 cats, caged in deplorable conditions.
Hernando County Sheriff's deputies say the trailer was so overrun with insects and rats, that Susan Kay was actually living outside the home in a 10x10 foot tent.
She wasn't alone. Deputies found 18 cats and a parakeet inside the tent. Many of them were in cages piled so high with newspaper and animal waste that the animals barely had room to move.
Kay surrendered all of the cats and the bird to an Hernando County Animal Services officer.
Her neighbors in the Hidden Valley Campground off Cortez Boulevard say the stench was so strong, they rarely went outside.
"You can smell it can't you? Well what do you think about me, when the wind blows?" neighbor Gayle Stickler said Thursday.
Kay was cited with 18 counts of animal neglect. The cats were transferred to Hernando County Animal Services for treatment.
