Police Search For Child Abduction Suspect

PHILADELPHIA -

Frightening moments at a Germantown recreation center as a nine-year-old is abducted, stuffed in the trunk of a car, and driven away.

Charlene Cooper's compassion may have helped save a nine-year-old boy's life.

"I asked him is he ok, and he shook his head no," she recalled.

Around seven, Tuesday evening, she says she spotted him wandering alone, headed East at Gorgas Avenue.

"He just looked a little dazed and confused. He looked lost," remembers Cooper.

Cooper says she called 911 after the little boy told her he'd just escaped the clutches of a man who kidnapped him while playing at Lonnie Young Recreation Center in Germantown.

Parents at the park were stunned by the news.

"I would be devastated if someone snatched one of my kids and I'd be ready to kill something," says Nadine Tucker, a concerned parent.

"There are predators everywhere and you never know when someone can grab your child," says Cooper.

Police say the boy was abducted from the Chelten Avenue rec center and forced into the trunk of a car. Then he was taken to the basement of an abandoned home. He told police he escaped through a basement door when his abductor went upstairs.

"He's despicable," says Cooper. "Because the kid was able to get away, who knows what the intentions were gonna be."

Residents are now wondering where's the police protection.

"I would have at least like to see presence of police, and would have liked to see rec center be more responsible," says cooper.

That 9-year-old boy is okay. Police say he wasn't harmed. We have a vague description of the suspect. We're told the he may have been driving a Gray Ford Sedan.
