Restaurant manager Andrew Tian was a loving father, gifted artist, and friend to everyone who knew him.
His girlfriend, Marylou Anderson, says he was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back. Tragically, he lost his life over $31 and some change.
Last week, investigators say the three men had dinner at the New Dynasty Restaurant in Sarasota and walked out without paying.
"They were not regulars at the Dynasty. Regulars loved Andrew, they knew Andrew. Andrew would have paid their bill," Anderson said.
When Tian followed them outside, investigators say Juan Rodriguez punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. The injury to his head was so severe, he died a few days later, explained Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight.
"At the end of the day, the individual striking him was really over the fact that he did not want to pay $31 at the restaurant," Knight said.
While Rodriguez was not a regular at the restaurant, he was a familiar face to law enforcement.
"Mr. Rodriguez is a documented gang member out of Manatee County, but he has been arrested in the past on weapons charges, assault with a firearm, discharging a weapon from a vehicle," Knight continued.
And now he's charged with manslaughter -- a charge that could put him away for a very long time.
But for Tian's loved ones, there is no amount of justice that will ever be enough.
"This man took my tomorrows away, and I hope that the moment they asked how he should be judged, how long should he be put away, that I get a chance to take his tomorrows away as well," Anderson added.
