Two suspects in the overnight shooting of an Orlando Police officer are in custody, investigators say.
Demetrius Patterson was arrested Tuesday morning in connection with the shooting of Officer Jason Hajek, 24. The identity of the second suspect has not yet been released.
Hajek was shot in the abdomen and leg while conducting a traffic stop at about 2:30 a.m., police say. He had pulled over a vehicle at Roseboro Street near Bruton Boulevard for driving recklessly. Two men emerged from the vehicle; one shot Hajek and fled on foot, police said.
A wounded Hajek returned fire while lying in the bushes, according to police Chief Paul Rooney.
"This officer did such a good job after getting shot -- lying in the bushes to give out an exact location, to give out suspect info -- and that's how we were able to respond so quick. One of our lieutenants who is a paramedic... he was able to administer first aid right away, and the surgeon said that really helped a lot," Rooney said.
Hajek was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he emerged from surgery at about 6 a.m.
Patterson has a long arrest record and got out of Florida prison in October 2012, according to state records.
"I have grave concerns with the number of officer involved shootings... and officers in general," Rooney said.
