Detroit firefighters hold informational demonstration

DETROIT (WJBK) -

A group of Detroit firefighters say they're department has been cut to the bone and their pensions are now under attack.

That's why they took to the streets in front of the now-closed Engine Co. 51 on the city's west side Monday for an informational demonstration.

"Citizens don't know what's going on as firehouses close and they're not as safe as they think they are," said Detroit firefighter Tyrone Callaway.

Callaway says he fought three fires Sunday night based in a station that picks up the slack from the shuttered Engine Co. 51.

Callaway says Engine Co. 51's closing prevents residents in the area from receiving fast response times.

Detroit residents tell FOX 2 they're grow weary of public officials cutting department budgets and staff.

In the past 30 years, demonstrators say fire deaths have shot up from 30 in 1983 to 79 over the past year.

"Out of 100 years of this department, we have never been stretched this thin," said firefighter Dennis Hunter. "Guys are overworked. They're tired. The department is getting older. We just need people to call their representatives to say 'protect public safety.'"
