At age 5, budding scientist has NASA's attention

Posted: Updated:

John John Humphreys is 5 years old, and has not even started Kindergarten.

And he is more than happy to show you his business card…that he designed…complete with social media link…and a QR code...

A QR code?

We asked what was inside the bar code-like splotch. John John responded, "Well you gotta scan it first, and see where it leads you to."

It's a typical invitation to explore from an atypical volunteer science teacher. With help from his mom and grandmother, John John has produce dozens of science and "how to" videos, which are posted on "Amazing John John"'s YouTube channel.

"He did his ABC's at, like, 6 months old," mom Nicole Humphreys told FOX 13 News.

John John repeats some of the experiments, and performs magic tricks to live audiences of disadvantaged children.

"He just sees kids, and he wants to have fun with them," Nicole said, "And they have fun with him."

The science videos all start with the words "learning is fun." John John knows that concept eludes many children.

"Sometimes kids don't really know that it is fun. I teach them," he declared with great confidence.

His mother said the love of science started at about age 2, when John John witnessed his first rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center. He recently returned there to check out the new Atlantis exhibit, and his interest has been noted: His photo and comments have appeared on several NASA-related web pages, including a new posting on the NASA Commercial Crew's Facebook page Thursday afternoon.

"I like when he talks to the astronauts, or the rocket scientists," Nicole laughs. "Because he asks them questions, and they look at me like -- and I'm like, no, he's asking you the chemical compound to make it work -- and I don't know the answer."

John John aspires to be an astronaut. Specifically, a shuttle commander.

"Space is pretty cool," he said.

Many of his "how to" videos relate to his own experiences, such as how to have one's photograph taken professionally. The next project may have been determined Thursday afternoon.

"How to go to a dentist," John John mused, adding "Oh, and speaking of dentists, I have a dentist appointment today."
