Hit by car and left for dead, dog is found clinging to life

"Bella" is a Shepherd mix that has seen better days. Her hip is fractured in three places, but she is alive because someone cared.

Simone Tolley was driving home from work along Dover Road when she saw a dog in the road, and cars swerving around it.

And then, she watched in horror as a car hit the dog.

"The dog literally flew from his car right in front of my car into the ditch," she said. "I just broke into tears when I saw that happen."

The driver of that car kept going; Simone, who is eight months pregnant, called her husband for help.

"She called me and asked if I could stop on the way home and see if I could find the body, and maybe bring it home to bury instead of leaving it on the side of the road for the birds on the am," Mike Tolley wrote on his Facebook page.

"I expected to find a body," Mike said in an interview with FOX 13.

He was ready to bury the dog.

"As soon as I saw the brown lump, I shined a flashlight in its direction. She looked up and I wasn't ready for that," he said.

He immediately called his wife.

"You could tell the tears were in his eyes. His words were, ‘I found her. I found her, she's alive," Simone said.

They rushed the dog to a vet where she underwent surgery Thursday afternoon.

And they gave her a name: "Bella."

She wasn't wearing a tag and did not have a chip. For now, the family and Brethren of St. Francis Animal Rescue are taking care of her costs. But for Mike and Simone, who run two restaurants and have a baby on the way, the bills are piling up.

"It is all hard, but there is not a question in my mind we'll find a way," said Mike.

Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill in Brandon and the Brethren of St.Francis Animal Rescue INC will host a fundraiser to help with medical costs for Bella on August 4, 2013 from noon until 6:00 P.M at Uncle Mike's Smokehouse.
