Family narrowly escapes home after tree falls on roof

Posted: Updated:

Maria Ramirez says it's a miracle they all survived. She and four of her five daughters were in the living room when the roof suddenly crashed in all around them.

"My mom was screaming our names, trying to open the door. She couldn't. We just ran. We were just scared. Really scared, and we just ran over there as fast as we could and tried to jump out." says her daughter Maria Arrona.

She says they saw the storm move in, but never imagined the 100-year-old oak tree towering over her family's mobile home would snap in half -- but it did.

"We were all just standing there and out of nowhere, the roof was lifting up. You could hear it and then the tree fell down." Arrona said.

Strong storms toppled trees and power lines throughout the Tampa Bay Area, knocking out the lights for about 9,000 TECO customers. Hillsborough deputies, who are normally assigned to the gang unit, instead broke out the chainsaws and gloves to help clear the roads.

Across the bay in Clearwater, lightning may be to blame for a fire at a house on Woodside Drive. It may not look like much, but firefighters say the flames ripped through the attic, just as the thunderstorms rolled in.

For Maria Ramirez and her daughters, there's hardly a home left. But they're all O.K. and they say, that's really all that matters.

"We're lucky that we all got safe," Arrona says.
