We want to tell you about an amazing physician, who is not only at the top of his field, but also has donated more of his money than just about any doctor in the country. He is a pioneer in ophthalmology, and has made it his mission to help others.
Dr. Jim Gills has an easy way with his patients. You can quickly tell why he's one of the top ophthalmologist in the country. He is a pioneer in the industry, performing more cataract implant surgeries than any other ophthalmologist in the world. But what's sets him apart even more is his generosity.
"If you have any money left when you die, you absolutely have not lived a fulfilled life," Dr. Gills said. "You make money and give it away to very meaningful things."
He gives away 90 percent of his income to help others.
"We are able to give more and it really works out well," Dr. Gills said.
Dr. Gills came to Florida 45 years ago. He opened St. Luke's Cataract and Laser Institute, and he has been making history along the way.
His son Dr. Pit Gills practices with his dad.
"It's been really nice. We've been together now for over a decade, and really I've been following him around since I was a little kid," Dr. Pit Gills said.
Many people in their office have worked with Dr. Gills for more than 30 years. He sets the tone here for compassion, for both his patients and those in need.
"If you don't have a purpose your life is empty," Dr. Gills said. "A purpose-driven life is the only thing that's important."
