Health experts: skip outdoor exercise during heat wave

Posted: Updated:

With a heat wave expected to continue through the weekend, health experts say exercising or exerting yourself outdoors during the hottest days of the year is a bad move to make.

Temperatures in New York City are reaching highs in the 90s with the heat index crossing into 100 plus degrees.

The humidity is also very high meaning there is more moisture in the air making it difficult to breath.

Exercising or working outdoors in construction, landscaping and the like could lead to stomach cramps, muscle aches, heat exhaustion or worse, says. Dr. Roshini Raj.

"Heat stroke can be fatal," says Dr. Raj.

If you must exercise outdoors, it's best to do so in the early morning or late evening once temperatures have dropped.

"Exercise inside the air conditioning, if you must," says Dr. Raj.
