TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The sheriff's office says a domestic dispute turned into a deputy-involved shooting Wednesday morning.

It happened at the Oakbend Apartments located at 1538 University Woods Place in Tampa. Two women called 911 after an ex-boyfriend showed up with a gun, deputies said.

The area is just south of Fletcher Avenue and west of the University of South Florida.

The sheriff's office says a deputy told the man to put down his gun repeatedly and get on the ground.

The man didn't listen, according to witness accounts, so he opened fire.

The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where his condition was unknown.

The deputy, identified by the agency as James Woods, is 44 years old and is a 16-year HCSO veteran. He's been put on the standard paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
