Walled Lake opts to keep police force, cuts five officers

WALLED LAKE, Mich. (WJBK) -

The city of Walled Lake won't lose its police department, but five police officers will lose their jobs.

Mayor Pro Tem Linda Ackley says city council approved a measure Tuesday that keeps the police force intact, despite a budget deficit that reportedly sits at $10 million.

"We're not raising the taxes in the city of Walled Lake," said Ackley. "We're maintaining the fire department as it is with four full time firefighters. We're keeping the police department with five full time police officers, the deputy chief and the police chief. We will support with part time individuals as needed."

City officials were weighing the option of closing the police department and outsourcing the work to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department.

Residents voiced their concerns during Tuesday's meeting. "I do not want to see us lose our police that will take a bullet for us," said one resident.
