St. Petersburg police are investigating a pair of connected shootings, and one of them involved officers.
It all started at the Dover Apartments on 30th Avenue North around 8:30 p.m. A woman was found shot several times.
Then police tracked down the suspected shooter to a home on 14th Avenue, and that ended with a deadly shootout.
The woman has been identified as Alyssa Dudley. She's in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Officers say the man who shot her was Carlos Crompton, 39.
They tracked him down to a nearby home. Detectives say Crompton got a gun out of his car and started shooting but missed.
Two officers opened fire, hitting him. They are Brian Burton, 29, and Joseph Heer, 28. Crompton later died at the hospital.
"It's a dangerous job," Bill Profitt of St. Pete Police said. "Everyone knows that. Obviously recent events reinforce that as well. I'm just thankful that no officers were injured and I'm thankful that we were able to apprehend the suspect. These things happen, and it's part of police work."
The two officers involved are now on paid leave.
Detectives say the man and woman had a relationship in the past, but they don't know the motive of the attack.
