Polk deputy fired over alleged relationship with informant

Posted: Updated:

Law enforcement officers have to have a good relationship with their confidential informants, but investigators say the relationship that Deputy Martin Friar had with one of his was way too close.

Back in February, a tipster told the Polk Sheriff's Office that Friar was having a sexual relationship with a woman who was a felon. Investigators were never able to prove that. But a deputy can be fired for just hanging out with a felon unless the felon is a relative.

Friar's cellphone contained what investigators considered damning evidence. It had adult pornographic pictures that were sent from his cell phone to her. Friar denies sending them, saying he was set up. His defense didn't work. He was fired anyway.

His friend, former Officer Shawnee McCaulk, became part of the investigation as well. Investigators asked him about Friar's relationship with the woman. He didn't do well.

"We found he was untruthful, so he was fired for his untruthfulness," a Polk Sheriff's Office spokesman told FOX 13.
