New financial disclosure records reveal how much money our lawmakers have made outside of politics. In the Florida House, nearly one in four have a net worth of more than a million dollars.
In the Florida Senate, 15 out of 35 (more than 40 percent) a have net worth of more than a million. (Some legislators have not yet filed their reports.)
Voters like Sherry Donovan of Tampa say it shows why some of our lawmakers are unable to relate to working-class families.
"They have no clue, none really," said Donovan. "Of course they lose the common touch. My gosh you couldn't even imagine living the kind of lifestyle they live."
Congressman Dennis Ross previously served in the legislature. He said good politicians relate to voters, no matter how much they make.
"I think I reflect what people want to become (and that is successful over time, with trial and error.) But to say it's an elitist group, I hope not," he said.
