Good Samaritan Saves Woman Who Fell Onto SEPTA Track

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A rescue on the tracks. Surveillance cameras are rolling when a woman stumbles off a SEPTA platform and lands directly on the tracks below.

The terrifying accident happened just after rush hour this morning on the Broad Street Line.

A good Samaritan just happened to be walking by when the woman fell.

The women is at Temple being treated for facial injuries, cuts and bruises.

And SEPTA says with the help of a good Samaritan, everything worked the way it was supposed to with the rescue.

Surveillance shows the woman repeatedly backing up and then falling right onto the tracks at SEPTA's Philadelphia station at Broad and Lehigh.

It's unclear what caused her to fall. SEPTA cameras captured the woman running along the middle of the platform when she sees a train coming.

Everything appears to be fine as she stands under the passenger waiting area for another train. Then suddenly, you see the woman turning in circles several times before backing up to the edge of the platform and falling onto the tracks.

A man in the white shirt walks up, looking for a train, and spots her.

He uses the yellow SEPTA box to call for help. Then jumps onto the tracks to be with the unconscious woman until help got there.

Then the happy ending. Police and fire crews arrive on the scene within minutes, bringing the woman to safety.

While SEPTA is praising the man who helped, they warn never get down on the tracks.

"We think it was very brave to do so, but he doesn't really know our system. We have a third rail down there, we have power down there, and he doesn't know when the next train is coming," says Jerri Williams of SEPTA. "So the safe thing to do is to let SEPTA handle it.
