Hall Co. inmate with violent history escapes custody

Posted: Updated:
HALL COUNTY, Ga. -

Hall County authorities want people to be on the lookout for an inmate with a history of violent crimes who escaped during a custody transfer.

Officers say James Cantrell, 46, was among a group of inmates being escorted from the local courthouse back to the Hall County Jail after court proceedings Tuesday afternoon. At one point, however, he managed to escape.

Cantrell was able to hide in the alcove of a locked doorway on the exterior of the courthouse. He subsequently located a nearby 1998 red Ford pick-up truck which had the keys in the ignition and left the area.

He's a black male, six feet tall and weighing 205 lbs. He was last seen wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffed in front of his body. Authorities say Cantrell has multiple tattoos on right forearm below the elbow.

Anyone who sees Cantrell should not approach or attempt to make contact with him, Hall County authorities say. He has a history of violent crimes and should be considered dangerous.

If you see him, please call 911 immediately.
