Stray Bullet Hits Woman In Hospital And Scares Upland Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
UPLAND BOROUGH, Pa. -

The sound of gunfire had Lisa Johnson rushing to save her children.

"I was inside my home with my children and I told them to get down and brace themselves," recalls Lisa Johnson.

Johnson tells us she heard the shots coming from her Upland neighborhood before midnight last night. It's just yards away from Crozer Chester Medical Center, where a bullet went flying into a patient's room around the same time.

"I'm like wow. That's the only thing I can say. It's unbelievable," says Dshonta Atkinson, a neighbor. "That's crazy. She was in the hospital."

The Delaware County District Attorney's office tells us the bullet pierced through two panes of glass on the first floor. It struck a 62 year old woman in the stomach. She was sitting in bed at the time.

"Extremely unusual," says Delaware County District Attorney John Whelan. "Very unusual. Kind of shocking. I understand where people would be concerned."

Investigators believe it was a stray bullet and could have come from a mile away.

"We now have the daunting task to make sure we cover the entire area surrounding that section of the hospital as to where the bullet could have come from," says DA Whelan.

Now neighbors like Johnson are on edge, wondering who could be shot next.

"I want my kids to be safe," says Johnson. "They're young."

Johnson worries violence is becoming too common in the neighborhood. She points out more bullet holes from two days ago.

"This is a bad neighborhood," says Johnson. "There are gun shots normally. This is not unusually and I really think it's time they crack down.

Police are still looking for the shooter. They have gathered surveillance video from around the area, including from the hospital for evidence and information. Anyone with information is asked to call the Upland Borough Police Department (610-872-0965) or the DA's office (610-891-4000).
