A Pinellas County woman was arrested and charged with neglect after her disabled husband was taken to the hospital with severe bedsores and insects in his open wounds, police said.
Pinellas Park Police arrested 48-year-old Sharon Louise Tillman on Monday.
According to an arrest report, her husband Greg Tillman was bedridden in a soiled bed with open sores and maggots crawling in the wounds.
"In law enforcement, fire rescue personnel, the medical profession, we see a lot of things. This is not something we normally see. The conditions this man was living in, and what his body was being subjected to were deplorable at best," Pinellas Park Police Sgt. Brian Unmisig said Tuesday.
One sore on his leg had been open so long, the bone was dry and skin was no longer growing over it, the arrest report said.
Tillman is charged with abuse or neglect of an aged or disabled person. Neighbors say Greg Tillman appeared to be in bad health for many months.
"He's always been a very thin man and very emaciated, and never really looked like he was that healthy. He seemed to do the best that he could," neighbor Anthony Leverso said Tuesday.
This is the second reported case in recent weeks of neglect so severe that caregivers have been arrested. Last month, Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies arrested and charged 65-year-old Mary Winston's husband and three children. They say she died in her bed last year covered in open bedsores and maggots.
