SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

38-year-old Sheila McGeorge is strong mentally and physically, but getting there was a long, tough journey.

At 30, McGeorge found herself a mother of five in an abusive marriage.

"I was pushed. I was slapped. I was punched. I was thrown out of cars, held hostage at gunpoint, actually dragged through the house by my hair," she said.

Perhaps as damaging as the physical abuse were her husband's words.

"He told me I was ugly, I was fat, I would never be good enough," she said.

It was with the help of a friend that McGeorge escaped the torture and slowly started to rebuild herself from the inside out with counseling to strengthen her mind and exercise for her muscles.

McGeorge started to transform, but after having five kids, she found herself in need of plastic surgery and went to see Dr. Anthony Youn.

"Over a third of plastic surgery patients have recently divorced or recently broken up," the doctor said.

However, Youn warns patients like McGeorge that surgery is nothing to attempt when your life is in upheaval.

"If you're not in a good state of mind, if you're not stable, if your therapist, if your family doctor doesn't believe that this is a good time for you to have it, you shouldn't. The best time to have plastic surgery is when your life is stable, and this is a very rational decision that you make for yourself," he said.

For McGeorge, the surgery happened at the right time. Now happily remarried, her former life is a distant memory and her confidence is soaring.

"The strong, beautiful person that I felt like I am inside, I was now able to show the world and see outside," she said.
