Roads reopen after St. Pete gas leak

Posted: Updated:

A gas leak in St. Petersburg cut off a busy route to the beaches this morning.

Central Avenue and 1st Avenue S were closed between 72nd Street and Park Street because of a leak in a six-inch gas main. With those streets closed, access to the Treasure Island Causeway was restricted.

A gas company contractor was doing a repair along the roadway in front of a small strip mall when the leak occurred. A St. Pete Fire Rescue spokesman said the gas main was leaking "profusely."

Several businesses in the are were evacuated until the leak could be capped.  Everything was back to normal by about 1:30 p.m.

There were no reports of injuries.
