The National Weather Service has downgraded Tropical Storm Chantal to a tropical wave.
As of Wednesday evening, Chantal's winds remained 45 mph -- down from 65 mph late yesterday -- but a Hurricane Hunter plane was unable to find any closed circulation.
"After finding something resembling a center earlier today, the same Air Force reconnaissance plane spent several hours investigating the storm and determined that Chantal no longer has a closed circulation," the NHC's 5 p.m. update explained.
The remains of the system will continue speeding west, then northwest, forecasters expect. It could still bring heavy rain to Hispanola before moving over Cuba and possibly the Florida peninsula in a few days.
Forecasters say wind shear in the Caribbean will probably keep the storm from redeveloping any tropical characteristics.
