Staffer to former Detroit City Councilwoman charged in bribery

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Federal agents have added a new name to the growing list of those caught in the ever-widening probe of corruption in the city of Detroit.

George Stanton, the former chief of staff to one-time Detroit councilwoman Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, was charged with taking a bribe. According to court documents Stanton took a $15,000 cash bribe from Atlanta businessman Roy Dixon in exchange for Stanton influencing Dixon's business dealings with the city's pension funds.

Dixon was charged last year with embezzling more than $3 million from three local pension funds.

So far there's been no comment from Stanton or Tinsley-Talabi, who is now a state representative. Stanton faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted and is the sixth person charged in the federal investigation into bribery and extortion.

The lead defendant is former Detroit Treasurer Jeffrey Beasley, a close friend and fraternity brother of ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

These latest charges come three weeks after Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr called for a corruption and fraud investigation of the pension funds.
