NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A woman was attacked and stabbed as she exited a train onto a busy Midtown Manhattan subway platform on Monday morning.

The NYPD says it appears to be a random attack by a homeless woman.  Witnesses say the suspect and the victim looked at each other and the one woman snapped.  No words were exchanged before the attack.

Police say the 31-year-old homeless woman stabbed the victim in the shoulder and abdomen on the 6 train platform at the 59th and Lexington station beneath the famous Bloomingdale's department store.

The bloody victim stumbled into the store to seek help.

The 38-year-old victim was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center and was expected to survive.  She was listed in critical but stable condition on Monday afternoon.

It happened at about 10:15 a.m.  Another woman who tried to intervene was punched by the suspect but was not seriously injured.

Witnesses grabbed the attacker until police arrived.

The NYPD says the attacker was arrested at the scene but her name was not released.  She was described as emotionally disturbed and taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
