A Polk County family is suffering a terrible loss. The body of their loved one was found off Ana Maria Island Sunday morning.
Fourteen year-old Dushay Nelson and his younger brother Deandre were swimming in the Gulf when two waves came in and a riptide began pulling them out.
The family, picnicking on the beach, became frantic. A friend went in to rescue the boys but could only grab one.
That's when Dushay's mom says her son became a hero.
"My son was able to push his brother out of the deep, closer to where our friend was able to get him," Sujeily Morales told FOX 13.
The friend told Dushay to keep his head above water until he could come back to help him. But Dushay couldn't. Rescuers looked for Dushay but hadn't found him by day's end.
They began again Sunday morning. His body was found around 9:30 a.m. about 150 yards offshore.
"Every body loved Dushay," Angel Morales, a family member told us. "For him to be gone like this is just tragic."
Dushay would have been a sophomore at Winter Haven High School this fall.
