Burglary victim speaks out about Decatur crime wave

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

A longtime Decatur resident said she's never seen anything like a recent string of crimes in her neighborhood.

The woman, who didn't want her identity revealed, is one of more than a dozen residents who have been targeted by burglars in recent weeks.

"[They] took a large screen TV and a computer, XBox, things like that," she said.

While the stolen items can be replaced, the 15-year Winona Park resident said her peace of mind isn't as easy to fix.

"You are in an environment where people have been in your home uninvited and you don't feel safe any long," she said. "I had no idea that there was a crime spree going on within the city."

The uptick in crime has Decatur police concerned.  Since the end of May, there have been 13 burglaries, two carjackings, two robberies and an attempted robbery.

Earlier on Friday, a 24-year-old man rolled down his window on Sycamore Drive to give directions and found ended up on the pavement after a gun was pulled. Police said the thieves took his BMW with his wallet and phone inside.

Based on the description of the suspects in that crime, investigators don't believe it's related to an earlier carjacking this week. Police believe that crime, which took place at Oak Hearst Park, was committed by teenagers.

Police say they are increasing patrols in response to the crimes.

One burglary victim said that surveillance cameras and extra locks are boosting this victim's sense of security. She is hopeful police and neighbors can help put an end to the crime wave before someone gets hurt.

"I think it's going to take a community effort," she said.
