Above-ground construction underway on Ferris wheel

ATLANTA -

Above ground construction on Atlanta's newest coming attraction – the Skyview Atlanta Ferris wheel – got underway in downtown Atlanta Friday.

With the foundation in place, construction crews are assembling the base of the Ferris wheel in a sizeable plot directly beside the Tabernacle Atlanta concert hall in the 100 block of Luckie Street.

Michael Montgomery, general manager for Skyview Atlanta, said, "What you're seeing is the water balance tanks which will be part of the infrastructure that holds the wheel down to the ground. There are six of those, so there's no chance this thing's going anywhere once we start putting it all together. It's like a giant erector set."

The ride will feature glass-enclosed, temperature-controlled gondolas that will rise about 200 feet in the air. Each gondola will seat up to six people. The ride's developers say Skyview Atlanta will operate year-round.

Crews have wrapped on pour concrete for the foundation of the area where patrons will wait in line to take a ride. The foundation of the Ferris wheel, itself, called for an additional estimated 15,000 lbs. of cement -- about three truckloads.

What's next?

"The next few days… I would say within the next three to four days, you're going to see the A-frame up. Then, about the fifth day, you're going to start seeing the wheel being assembled. Then, with all of the hope that I can give, we should be up and running by the weekend… next weekend."

Even though wet weather is expected over the next few days, crews say that they'll be able to keep working as long as there's nothing severe.

Developers say the will cost $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for children. The ride will complete four revolutions per ride and last about 15 minutes, according to developers.
