Drowning toddler rescued by retired firefighter

NEW YORK (AP) -

A retired FDNY firefighter helped save a 2-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a neighbor's pool.

John Manzione performed CPR on the child while waiting for emergency services to arrive on Thursday.

Manzione was attending a July 4th block party in Queens when he heard screams.

He told the New York Post the toddler wasn't breathing and his eyes were rolled back in his head when he arrived.

A 32-veteran of the FDNY, Manzione said at that moment "all the training kicked in and I went on instinct."

The boy was initially in cardiac arrest but EMTs revived him in the ambulance.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where officials said he was awake and alert.

Manzione retired in January from Engine Co. 291 in Ridgewood, Queens.
