ATLANTA -

Falling trees caused problems across the metro Atlanta area on Thursday.

Georgia Power crews worked late into the night after a century-old tree knocked out power poles along Benjamin E. Mays Road in southwest Atlanta.

The power outage meant open doors and candlelit rooms at Delores Murray's home, where more than 70 family members had gathered to celebrate the holiday and Delores' birthday.

"Have to bring the candles out and get ready to light them up because we don't have any light and a house full of people," said Brian Winbush. "We are still blessed. We got food on the table. God has been good."

Georgia Power said it could take 10 hours to get the power back to the more than 200 homes affected by the outage. That meant a birthday to remember for Delores Murray.

"People still here, people still coming in so we are just having a good time anyway," said Murray.

Elsewhere in Atlanta, a huge oak tree fell on Plymouth Road. While it landed in between two houses, it did some structural damage to the roof of one of those homes. It also brought a power line down with it.

Another fallen tree blocked Hugh Howell Drive in DeKalb County.

Over in Marietta, cleanup crews worked fast to clear streets and yards of debris and to pick up power lines brought down by falling trees.

Homeowners said they were thrilled with the fast response from city crews.
