L.I. families celebrate holiday with BBQ at Eisenhower Park

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Many families on Long Island spent the Fourth of July enjoying a day at the beach while other celebrated the holiday at the park.

Some families at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow making traditional 4th of July food and mixing it with traditions from all over the world.

"It's an American burger but a little Trini flavor," said Nora Mitchell.

Hot sauce from Trinidad will grace hamburger patties while pork belly with kimchi is a 4th of July staple at one BBQ station. These diverse feasts are somehow fitting for America's birthday -- a celebration of a nation made up of immigrants.

"It's an opportunity to teach our children about this country every year."

At the park Fox 5 didn't want to insult anyone so we tried everything on display.

Long Island beaches were also party headquarters with about 1,000 even people who wore very little wore red white and blue.

"We love America," said one beach goer.

The American flag was a fashion statement.

"I just wanted to show that I loved America and so thankful for the men and women who fight for this country," said one man decked out in red, white and blue.

With that there was finally some nice weather after slow start to the beach season.

"We needed it badly. We haven't seen this (weather) all summer long yet ... it's starting to come," said George Gorman/NYS Parks.

So whether you were at the beach or in the park, eating kimchi or Trini burgers -- America gives you the freedom to celebrate any way we like.
