Joey Chestnut Wins 7th Hot Dog Eating Contest, Sets New Record

Posted: Updated:

Joey Chestnut ate 69 hot dogs today, in Coney Island's annual July 4th hot dog eating contest.

Chestnut previously set the record for 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes in 2009. He tied that record in 2012.

With his seventh win, Chestnut, from San Jose, California, has not only set a record for the number of hot dogs eaten in one sitting, he's also set a record for the number of times won.

Takeru Kobayashi is the only other person with six wins on his belt in hot dog eating. Chestnut's win today bested his former rival.

Competitive eating is much more serious a sport than most imagine. Not only are there two leagues (the Federation of Competitive Eaters and the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters), but serious eaters spend time training their bodies. Some take hot dog wieners and practice the swallow reflex to train the throat to open and the esophagus to glide food down quicker. Others gorge on lettuce or other calorie-low foods to train their stomachs to expand quicker.

The top competitive eaters hold records in categories as diverse as butter eating to cow brain eating.

The Coney Island contest, called the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is in its 98th year.

The second place winner at this year's contest was Matt Stonie, who ate 51 hot dogs. Women have also been competing separately since 2011. Sonya Thomas was the winner for women. She ate 37 wieners.
