Deputies: Stolen car slams into girls’ bedroom

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Deputies say a stolen car slammed into an apartment Thursday morning, and the driver fled the scene on foot.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. at the Puritan Apartment Complex on Puritan Road and 50th Street North.

The stolen car was a Lexus. According to the sheriff's office, the driver lost control of the vehicle, hopped a curve, crashed through a fence and slammed into a downstairs apartment.

A family of four was inside, and the car actually went through the bedroom where two girls usually sleep. However, they were not sleeping inside the room at the time, deputies said.

FOX 13 spoke to the mother, who said it appeared the driver was a teenager.

"He jumped out the car the first time," she said. "By the time I was able to get out, he came back and was trying to back the car out the house. He was saying, ‘Don't tell my mamma.' I was like, ‘Are you serious?'"

She said the boy then snatched the tag from the car and ran away.

The crash caused about $25,000 in damage to the apartment and $10,000 to the Lexus.

Detectives say they believe they know who stole it, but they are not releasing his name.
