ATLANTA -

Rain is putting a damper on many planned Fourth of July festivities.

Celebrations have been canceled across the metro area as heavy rain has caused flooding in some places.

A heavy band of showers began moving in the western counties in the early part of the afternoon, dumping several inches of rain and prompting flood watches and warnings in numerous counties.

FOX 5 Live VIPIR estimated that nearly 6 inches of rain had fallen in areas near LaGrange. In the Newnan area, more than 4 inches had fallen.

FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Ken Cook says many places in north Georgia can expect 2 to 4 more inches of rain between now and Friday.

A Flood Warning is in effect in Cobb and Forsyth until further notice. A Flood Warning is in effect in Fulton County until Saturday.

A Flood Watch is in effect until 8 a.m. on Friday in the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattahoochee, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, De Kalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Harris, Heard, Henry, Jackson, Lamar, Lumpkin, Marion, Meriwether, Murray, Muscogee, North Fulton, Paulding, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Schley, South Fulton, Spalding, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Towns, Troup, Union, Upson, Walker, Webster, White and Whitfield

FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Jeff Hill said that flooding is being reported in Union County after between 5 and 6 inches of rain has fallen. Some roads were reportedly underwater, while water was up to some home foundations.

A state of emergency has been declared in Flowery Branch, where flooding has forced the city to close Cantrell Street where it crosses Flowery Branch Creek.

Cobb County Commissioner Bob Ott checked on several spots known to flood in his county.

A downed tree took out several power poles and left a Smyrna neighborhood without power. Drivers were urged to avoid id Church at Flagler streets as crews worked to clear the scene and restore power.

In Towns County, there are reports that four county roads are closed due to flooding: Settlement, Winchester Creek, Kirby and Crisp roads. Two are reportedly washed out, while two are completely impassable according to county management.

The National Weather Service is asking for reports of rainfall amounts greater than 3 inches. You can send them to us here.

Not all areas got drenched. Carrollton reported less than 1 inch as of 6 p.m.

While drier air hangs out to the west, a look in-between shows a huge river of moisture coming up out of the Gulf of Mexico. That's the reason we will get heavy rainfall in north Georgia over the next couple of days.
