SEPTA Injury Or Death, Third Time In Three Days

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A Philadelphia man is very lucky a train wasn't coming when his wheelchair rolled off the platform onto the tracks at Market East Station.

It's the third time in three days that there's been an injury or death on SEPTA tracks.

SEPTA cameras captured the disabled man seemingly having problems with his electronic wheelchair early Tuesday morning.

Then moments later, the chair rolls right across the platform and topples onto the regional rail train tracks.

"He sat there for a little while and unexplainably rolled into the track area," says SEPTA Spokesperson Jerri Williams.

The man stayed on the tracks for more than 15 minutes before another passenger discovered him. Train service stopped and firefighters arrived to rescue the man. He broke his leg. SEPTA says that he may have been drinking.

"We did find a broken liquor bottle on his person. We are not saying he was inebriated but that could have been a contributed to him rolling into the track area," says Williams.

It's the latest in a series of recent incidents on SEPTA's lines. Just today, a man was struck by train at the Penfield Station on SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line.

And back in May, a baby stroller rolled onto the tracks on the Market Frankford El.

SEPTA officials say different things caused the incidents, but it shows how passengers need to be more aware of their surroundings

"It's crowded and you know you may get pushed forward," says Rhonda Williams, a rider of SEPTA.

Even with warning signs and big yellow lines on the platform, people still get too close for comfort.

"People standing on the yellow line, trains coming by, winds coming in and different effects of gravity it's dangerous," reflects Vinny Aguilar of Langhorne.

Coincidently, back in May, SEPTA held it's first ever safety day by sending hundreds of their employees to rail stations throughout the system to warn passengers about rail safety and trespassing.
