NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down New Jersey on Monday morning.

The EF-0 tornado followed a 4.8-mile track from Berkeley Heights to Summit for about eight minutes, passing through New Providence, the NWS announced. A survey team estimated that the tornado had a maximum wind speed of 85 mph and was about 50 yards wide.

The tornado touched down at about 9:17 a.m. near the Passaic River just west of Garfield Street. It passed northeast through New Providence and lifted in Summit near Evergreen Avenue, the NWS said.

The tornado knocked down many trees, tree limbs, and power lines. The most serious damage happened at a sewage-treatment plant on Snyder Avenue, the Weather Service said.

An eyewitness reported seeing a funnel cloud, the NWS said.

No one was reported hurt, authorities said.

Severe weather made its way through the Tristate region on Monday. Another tornado touched down in Connecticut and a powerful storm event, possibly a microburst or a tornado, slammed a neighborhood in Yonkers.
