Eastbound I-4 shut down after deadly shooting

Posted: Updated:

It's not clear what caused the shooting that ended a man's life on I-4 Saturday afternoon, but a 911 call made by that victim tells us it started up the road a bit.

"We believe this started around 50th and Columbus based on the initial 911 call," said Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee. "We know that at one point in time this person did pull up beside him and showed him a handgun."

That's when that unidentified victim called police.

He said the male suspect started following him after he left a store in that area.

When that dispute came to a head in the eastbound lanes of I-4 near I-75 just after 3 p.m., a 911 operator was listening.

"During the time he was on the call with the Highway Patrol they actually heard the shooting, there was a series of shots," said Gee.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Deputies are still looking for the suspect in this case.

Investigators believe the suspect is traveling in a newer gray Ford Taurus.

While a cause is not apparent at this point investigators aren't ruling out road rage.

That is a plausible scenario that it is road rage but we don't know that," said Gee.

In an odd twist of fate this shooting happened very close to another fatal highway shooting from years ago.

That's when David Neel was shot and killed while driving on I-75 near I-4 back in 2005.

That case remains unsolved.

Investigators are looking for the public's help to solve this one.

"We're asking for any information from anybody. We know there were others cars in the area and we believe other people did see at least parts of what may have occurred," said Gee.
