Homeless man found beaten; teens arrested

NEW PORT RICHEY (FOX 13) -

It's been a tough couple of days for Franklin Randolph.

Randolph, seen here in a picture from a previous arrest, was found in this wooded area Tuesday near the intersection of Kentucky and Congress in New Port Richey in pretty bad shape.

"He was covered with insects, feces, urine and he was laying on a mattress in a wooded area," said Detective Gregory Williams of the New Port Richey Police Department. "Tuesday night on the 26th he was found by people walking by, passing by and initially figured he was deceased."

Randolph was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police say Randolph was sent to his hospital bed by two teenagers.

"He was able to remove the oxygen mask for a short period of time to where he could say he was beat up," said Williams. "These males had thrown logs at him, hit him with sticks, urinated on him, at one point they threw a concrete block at him."

Anthony Phillips, 15, and Brandon Youngerman, 17, have been arrested and charged with aggravated battery.

Police say the two did it as a joke.

"Basically they thought they were just having fun," Williams said.

Randolph's friends say he spends most of his time on the mattress in the woods where he was found because he suffers from other illnesses.

"He was very disabled so he really would lay on that bed and basically stay there," said neighbor Tammi Way-Kornow.

They say he certainly didn't deserve a beating that left him with a broken collarbone.

"For somebody to do that to anybody is just unbelievable," said Way-Kornow.

"I don't think that's cool at all, he was a nice guy. There's no reason for that," said friend Robyn Wells.

Police are just relieved Randolph isn't in worse shape.

"Thank God he was found when he was. Had he not been found, he may be deceased," Williams said.
