Detroit's next police chief wants to get something off his chest. It is a message for the crooks who think they don't have to answer to anyone.

"When you talk about middle aged, good Americans being carjacked and shot in the City of Detroit, home invasions, young individuals driving around in a very carefree manner armed with weapons with impunity, those days are over," said James Craig. "This police chief has no tolerance for violence."

"We'll deal with you in a very ethical, legal way, but if you commit acts of violence, you are going to go to jail. I don't have time to stage events at a gas station about how to prevent crime. I need our officers out arresting those violent perpetrators. That's what's going to happen in Detroit."

"I'm committed. I'm eager to get started because I know we're going to turn that corner, and I hope that the good men and women don't decide to leave and retire. I know there's a lot of fear of the unknown. I want them to stay," Craig added.

"I want the cops to know that they count. They're important. We value them. I want the community to know that we are a professional police agency, and professional police agencies don't ride around in dilapidated police cruisers."

We asked Craig whether it will be Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's plan or his that he will be putting into effect.

"I've hand a number of conversations with Kevyn Orr. I have a great deal of respect for Kevyn Orr. I think he inherited a very tough situation. He didn't create this situation. He inherited, so he's doing what he does. He went out and found a police chief, one that he believes will make a change that needed to be made," Craig said.

"To your question about who runs the police department, he's put that charge on me. I'm accountable. I'm responsible. James Craig is running the police department."
