Soldiers get warm welcome home in Lakeland

LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

Some of the Bay area's bravest returned home Tuesday evening after serving overseas. About two dozen of the U.S. Army Reserve's 993rd Transportation Unit arrived in Lakeland with a warm welcome by family and friends.

The unit served in Afghanistan for nine months. Specialist Louis Fritz arrived home to see his pint-sized son for the first time in months.

"It's amazing! I don't think he remembers me yet though," Fritz said while holding his 8-month old baby boy.

Specialist Orozco Alvarez was welcomed back by his biggest fan- his dad. His father is also military. Both father and son enlisted at age 17.

"I'm just very proud to see him coming here safe and sound and being able to continue with his life, doing his service to the nation and being back with us now, having time with his family again," Juan Alvarez said Tuesday.

The rest of the 993rd Transportation Unit is expected back by September.
