Delays in Regents grading

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When the seniors from John Bowne High School in Flushing, Queens, arrived for graduation at St. John's auditorium their parents crowded outside in the heat. Some families got eights tickets to attend while some only two.

One reason appears to be the Department of Education's failure to grade some Regents exams on time. Seniors must pass Regents exams in basic subjects to obtain a high school diploma.

Dozens of Bowne HS students and some parents waited for hours at the high school to get tickets for the graduation ceremony.

The problems for these graduating seniors not just limited to Bowne High. It's scattered citywide.

A Department of Education spokeswoman issued a response that began with "We are making progress with Regents scoring today. We are up from 94% scored yesterday to 97% scored by noon today."

The spokeswoman added less than 1 percent of seniors are waiting for regents results. But 1 percent is still dozens of students who will attend graduation ceremonies but not receive a diploma.
