It could be the greatest comeback story of 2013. And it has nothing to do with an injured athlete recovering miraculously or an older one coming out of retirement.
This comeback involves a small, sugary snack cake. Twinkies will start to show up on store shelves again mid-July. They disappeared last year after the Hostess Company, which had ongoing financial problems, finally declared bankruptcy.
Super Choice Foods on Memorial Blvd. in Lakeland is preparing for a big rush.
"They're gonna buy 'em," said store employee Keyosha Blake with a laugh. "Because they have been missing in action."
When they do reappear, it maybe with a twist or two. The new manufacturer is thinking about offering a crunchy version. It's also planning on selling gluten-free, low-sodium, and, believe it or not, low-sugar varieties.
As if that's not enough blockbuster news, as they say, there's more. The price of Twinkies will be the same as they were they were back in the good old days, about four bucks for a box of 10.
