Tech Check: Clinical trials apps

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's the dreaded word that no one wants to hear from their doctor: Cancer.

According to the Mayo-Clinic 90 percent of Americans have either been directly affected by cancer or know someone battling the disease.

Fortunately, clinical trials pave the way for medical breakthroughs and now thanks to technology, locating and enrolling in these trials have never been easier.

A new app just launched by the Clevelenad Clinic can literally put potential lifesaving treatment options at your fingertips. Patients can navigate through more than 130 clinical trials at a push of a button.

The trials are broken by disease, phase, physician and even hospital locations. The app includes financial service information and links to support groups.

It is free for Apple and Android users. For more visit clevelandclinic.org.

A similar app is being offered by drug discovery and research company. ClinicalTrials.com offers a free app that one can navigate through for trials of any disease and condition, not just cancer.

Users can save data from past trials and also contact trial administrators.

The app is available right now only to Apple users. For more visit clinicaltrials.com.

Of course, clinical trials can offer lifesaving treatments, but first, patients need to know exactly with what they are dealing.

That's where the Cancer Terms Pro app comes into play. It is basically a search engine for oncology medical jargon. Just type the first few letters into the app and it translates the most complicated medical terms into plain language. And the app doesn't even require an Internet connection to work.

Unfortunately, this app isn't free. The app will set you back $1.99.

The app is only available for Apple users. It can be downloaded through iTunes.
