A Bronx home for a wounded warrior

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Real estate isn't cheap in New York. And it's never free.

But thanks to a donation from the Bank of America and the Military Warriors Support Foundation, Army Specialist Sameesi Tokahani and his wife Miriami are the proud owners of a home in the Harding Park section of the Bronx.

The home needs work, and volunteers got started on the demolition on Friday. It should be ready in about a month.

Tokahani earned a Purple Heart for his service in Afghanistan after suffering a traumatic brain injury and partial blindness.

He said he has always lived where the Army sent him, so this place is a dream come true.

The community came out to give the couple a warm welcome. Yankees skipper Joe Girardi, whose dad was a Korean War veteran, was there, too. He got choked up talking about the sacrifices made by men and women, such as Tokahani.

Tokahani is originally from Fiji. He said he doesn't know much about baseball. But Girardi thinks he'll have them rooting for the Yanks in no time.

Bank of America said it plans on donating 1,000 houses to wounded veterans across the country.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
